Mulch Calculator
What this Mulch Calculator does
This mulch calculator estimates how much mulch you need for a given area and depth. It can help you plan materials for garden beds, shrub borders, tree rings, and other landscaping projects.
Many users want to know the amount in cubic yards, cubic feet, liters, or bag counts, depending on how mulch is sold. A useful mulch page should explain the calculation and give a quick example so users can plan purchases accurately.
Why it is useful
Buying too little mulch leaves a project unfinished, while buying too much wastes money. A calculator helps users estimate the right amount before they order.
How to calculate mulch
Measure the area you want to cover and choose the mulch depth. Then multiply the area by the depth to get volume, usually in cubic feet or cubic yards. If you are buying bagged mulch, divide the total volume by the bag size.
Step 1: Measure the area
Find the length and width of the bed, or use the total square footage of the space.
Step 2: Choose the depth
Enter the desired mulch depth in inches. A common landscaping depth is around 2 to 4 inches.
Step 3: Read the result
The calculator gives you the mulch volume and may also estimate the number of bags needed.
Formula
Cubic feet of mulch: Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 12
Cubic yards of mulch: Cubic feet ÷ 27
Bag count: Total cubic feet ÷ Bag size in cubic feet
Example calculation
Example: A 100 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep.
Cubic feet = 100 × 3 ÷ 12 = 25 cu ft.
Cubic yards = 25 ÷ 27 = 0.93 cu yd.
Example: How many 2 cu ft bags are needed?
25 ÷ 2 = 12.5, so round up to 13 bags.
Common uses of Mulch Calculator
- Garden beds and flower beds.
- Tree rings and shrub borders.
- Landscaping project planning.
- Bulk mulch and bagged mulch estimates.
Important tips
Add a small waste margin if the area is uneven or irregularly shaped. A little extra mulch is usually better than running short during installation.
Frequently asked questions
How much mulch do I need for my bed?
Measure the area, choose the depth, and use the volume formula to estimate the amount needed.
How deep should mulch be?
Most garden beds use about 2 to 4 inches of mulch, depending on the project.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
It depends on bag size. A 2 cubic foot bag gives about 13.5 bags per cubic yard.
Can I calculate mulch for a circular bed?
Yes. Measure the diameter or radius, calculate the area, and then use the depth formula.
Should I buy extra mulch?
Yes. A small buffer helps cover uneven ground, settling, and irregular edges.
